Sony’s finance chief Lin Tao has finally come clean: their big bet on live-service games “is not entirely going smoothly.” After the stunning flop and shutdown of Concord in 2024, bumps in the road have continued with Bungie’s Marathon postponement and the delay of Fairgame$. Even so, Sony still sees live-service as a golden ticket thanks to Helldivers 2’s success, the acquisition of Bungie, and steady earners like MLB The Show, Gran Turismo 7 and Destiny 2.
Despite last year’s setbacks—full refunds on Concord, Marathon’s playtest backlash and stolen-artwork drama—Lin Tao says Sony’s live-service sales hit about 40% in Q1 (20–30% across the full year). The message? Keep learning from mistakes, cut the waste, and double down on live-service content that actually works.
