Mortal Kombat 1 has quietly claimed the throne as this console generation’s top-selling fighting game with 6.2 million copies moved—despite lukewarm reviews and a nearly 60% drop from Mortal Kombat X’s 12 million and MK11’s 15 million. It still outpaces other big hitters like Street Fighter 6 (5 million), Tekken 8 (3 million) and Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero (5 million in three months).
NetherRealm boss Ed Boon says the team’s “still committed to refining MK1” with balance tweaks, but lower-than-expected sales have already axed further DLC support. Even at a low ebb, Mortal Kombat remains the casual-friendly heavyweight in a fighting-game market that’s lost some of its earlier momentum.
