Oblivion Remastered studio is reportedly laying off 300 people

Oblivion Remastered studio is reportedly laying off 300 people | PC Gamer

Make a game that doesn't sell? Laid off. Make one of the best-selling games of the year? Would you believe it, also laid off.

TL;DR

Virtuos—the co-development whiz behind Oblivion Remastered, Dark Souls Remastered and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Δ—has reportedly laid off about 300 staff (roughly 7% of its workforce). The news comes via French games journalist Gauthier “Gautoz” Andres on Bluesky, who points out that even working on one of the biggest hits of 2025 didn’t spare teams from cuts.

What’s up?

Apparently, Virtuos’ “over-quality” approach on a fixed‐fee, no‐royalty contract meant blockbuster success didn’t translate into bonuses. So despite helping churn out some of the year’s best-selling titles, a chunk of the studio is now waiting for the axe to drop—and it’s a harsh reminder that even big hits don’t always pay off for the folks doing the heavy lifting.
