Romero Games, the Irish studio founded by John and Brenda Romero, has reportedly shut its doors after Microsoft pulled funding for its unannounced Unreal Engine 5 FPS, leaving all 100+ staff unemployed. Employees say they only learned of the cancellation via LinkedIn, despite the title being well advanced, and are now hunting for new backers to salvage the project.
This closure is the latest fallout from Xbox’s big shake-up: Microsoft’s cutbacks affect some 9,000 jobs, have axed the Perfect Dark reboot, cancelled Rare’s Everwild, closed The Initiative and prompted leadership exits at ZeniMax Online amid the end of Project Blackbird.
