Romero Games, the Irish outfit founded by John and Brenda Romero, has apparently shut its doors after Microsoft abruptly pulled funding for their unannounced Unreal Engine 5 shooter. Over 100 staffers lost their jobs with zero warning—one anonymous team member described it as “a big shock.” While there’s talk of hunting down a new publisher, for now both the project and the studio sit in limbo.

This closure is just the latest fallout from Microsoft’s sweeping cuts—up to 9,000 roles wiped out, the Perfect Dark reboot and Rare’s Everwild canceled, The Initiative and parts of ZeniMax shuttered, and senior talent exiting left and right. The Xbox world is reeling, and Romero Games has become one of its most high-profile casualties.
