Sony’s gaming arm has officially dragged Tencent into a California courtroom, accusing the Chinese giant of creating a “slavish clone” of the Horizon series with its upcoming open-world RPG Light of Motiram. Filed July 25, the lawsuit claims Tencent ripped off Horizon’s trademarked looks—including an Aloy knock-off—after Sony declined a licensing pitch, and seeks a jury trial to block the game’s release and haul in up to $150,000 per infringed work plus destruction of any “prohibited” materials.
Despite the legal flare-up, Light of Motiram remains up for wishlist on Steam (no release date yet) and is being built by Polaris Quest, a Tencent subsidiary. Reuters first broke the story that Sony believes this copycat move is so brazen that the public has labeled it “crazy,” “insane,” and “shameless.”
