Doom:DarkAges sold Less than 1 Million Copies, despite Bethesda previous bragging about 3 Million Players

DOOM: The Dark Ages Has Reportedly Sold Less Than 1 Million Copies

Out of the 3 million players Bethesda bragged about last week, 2.2 million are said to be playing through Xbox Game Pass.

DOOM: The Dark Ages hit 3 million players, but under 1 million copies actually sold

Analysts at Alinea peg sales at just 800 000 units (200 k on PS5, 200 k on Xbox, 400 k on Steam), with the other 2.2 million accessing it via Xbox Game Pass at a fraction of the $70 price tag. Ampere’s data similarly shows a heavy Xbox/Game Pass skew and only modest full‐price buys, and Steam charts reveal a slow start compared to its predecessors.

This gap between player count and sales spotlights the growing power of subscription services—and the pressure it puts on big‐budget games to justify that $70 “industry standard.” With AAA reputations and profits under strain, many are asking: is flat-rate pricing for blockbuster titles still sustainable when AAs and indies keep stealing the spotlight?
