CD Projekt RED has revealed that The Witcher 4 is made with a console-first approach, unlike their previous games.

The Witcher 4 Goes Console-First

CDPR’s VP of Technology, Charles Tremblay, revealed in a recent Digital Foundry sit-down that The Witcher 4 is being built around a console-first Unreal Engine pipeline. The ambitious goal? A fully ray-traced open world running at 60 FPS on PS5—with everything else stripped back for now to nail performance rather than scaling down from a beefy PC build.

Challenges Ahead

While the tech demo looks gorgeous, it’s not a full gameplay loop yet, and getting 60 FPS on Xbox Series S “will be extremely challenging,” Tremblay admits. They’ve already swapped to hardware Lumen RT and plan to scale up for high-end PCs, but plenty of optimization lies ahead. The Witcher 4 is tentatively slated for 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S|X.
